Read MoreWell thats a good question. For the homeowner looking to have a nice lush lawn, aerating is never a bad idea. It can be a little labor intensive, but still manageable for the handy homeowner. And if you’re still intimidated by the thought, just give us a call and we can perform the task for you! Depending on the condition of your soil and your desire for an awesome lawn will determine how often you should aerate. Usually once per year is a good starting point and also won’t break the bank. Normally we recommend aerating in the spring or fall, around the same time as your first fertilizer application or your last. But really any time of the year works. Since we’re down South the ground can be pretty hard in the summer time so you may not be able to pull as deep of plugs as you would when the soil has a little more moisture in it. The process of aerating is simply running a machine across your lawn that will pull small “plugs” out of the ground. Usually the plugs are 2-3” long. By aerating you help break down the level of “thatch” or dead grass that hasn’t fully decomposed and you’re helping allow the yard to “breath” better which allows those roots to grow stronger.

That also means cutting your yard at the proper height during the correct times of the year. By sharpening our mower blades weekly we ensure a clean cut of the grass blades. Most of our mowers are designed to mulch the grass clippings into the yard. The grass then breaks down and provides additional nutrients to you lawn.
